Meet Vance the 2018-2019 DDS Ambassador
Vance is our third child so when he wasn’t standing, walking or talking at age one we became concerned. After meeting with various medical professionals, Vance was diagnosed with autism at the young age of 18 months. Because of his early diagnosis we were able to begin the process with the county Early Intervention program, which enabled us to begin services with Tanya, a Behavioral Specialist through Developmental & Disability Services of Lebanon Valley.
We noticed Vance needed some sensory guidance, so Tanya directed us toward occupational therapy so that Michelle an Occupational Therapist with DDS could begin treatment with Vance. She and Tanya worked together to establish goals for him to decrease self-harming behaviors and to promote language. Both Michelle and Tanya shared their knowledge with us and trained us on ways to work with Vance on a regular basis. Recently, Vance started to work with a physical therapist, Sue, who we also contracted through DDS.
Between the three of these woman educating our family at home, Vance is a different child. He no longer self-harms, he can communicate in 3-4 word sentences and can express his wants and needs.
It is amazing when you consider that within a year’s time of receiving Early Intervention Services Vance is walking and talking and communicating effectively with others. Vance is close to ageing out of Early Intervention and with the help of DDS we are more comfortable as we move into the next step.
